What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Canada always writes about how our team of experts are NATE-certified, and while it sounds reassuring, what does it actually mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as stated on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not everyone in the industry is required to be NATE-certified. The certification is voluntary and technicians can service heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment without being certified by NATE.

It’s important to Service Experts that our technicians are NATE-certified to make sure we are sending the most qualified and trained technicians into your home. To make sure experts meet these standards, the NATE-certification assessments validate real-world working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based assessments that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification instead of refrigeration, there are only particular areas relevant to our technicians. NATE test candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the specialty areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
