How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical part as your furnace prepares to work in your house.

Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down

When your pressure switch isn’t operating promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will let you know something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
