The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that gives financial support to those in the construction industry who are living with life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil endured a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would eventually be permanently in a wheelchair.
Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, resulting in financial pressure on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.
Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
